Counselling

Counselling for grief, difficult family dynamics, and the seasons that ask more of you than anyone can see — with someone who's spent 20+ years sitting with families in their hardest moments. I'm a Registered Social Worker (RSW), offering counselling by video to adults across Ontario.

Jeremy Ng, Registered Social Worker

What I can help with

A collaborative, strengths-based approach grounded in trauma-informed, anti-oppressive practice.

People often come to me saying things like:

  • "I lost someone and I don't know how to move forward."
  • "I'm caring for my parents and running out of energy."
  • "My family expects something of me that I'm not sure I can give."
  • "I've been feeling flat and stuck, and I can't explain why."
  • Grief & lossSupport through loss, in whatever form it's taken — including family loss, and grief that's tangled up with duty, guilt, or unfinished things. I hold a Children's Grief & Bereavement Certificate from the SickKids Centre.
  • Anxiety & depressionEveryday, ongoing support for the concerns that don't always make it into a bigger story.
  • Life transitionsCareer shifts, caregiving changes, becoming a parent, and other seasons that reshape daily life.
  • Difficult family dynamicsWorking through strained or complicated family relationships, including intergenerational and cultural tension.
  • Parenting supportWorking through the pressures of raising kids while managing everything else — including parenting across cultures or generations.

Couples Counselling

I offer structured premarital preparation using Prepare/Enrich, a widely used relationship assessment, to help couples build a strong foundation before marriage. I primarily work with couples who are engaged or newly committed, though I'm also open to working with couples at other stages — reach out to see if it's a good fit.

Hi, I'm Jeremy

Neighbouring is a verb

To me, neighbouring means showing up for someone — not fixing things from a distance, but getting close enough to listen, understand, and help.

I've spent more than 20 years alongside children, youth, adults, and families in child welfare, schools, and communities — through grief, family struggles, hard transitions, and times when life feels like too much. Most of us are already doing the best we can with what we're carrying. Sometimes it helps to have someone beside you to listen, ask a few questions, and help make sense of what's happening.

As a Chinese-Canadian myself, I understand the cultural, intergenerational, and faith dynamics that often show up in family tension, caregiving stress, and grief — generational expectations, immigration-related transitions, and complicated family ties.

How I work

You don't need a plan, or even words for what's wrong. We can start with whatever's on your mind most and work to understand it together. I'll listen, ask questions, and offer ideas or strategies when they might help — without assuming I already know your story.

I don't follow one single model. Depending on what you're carrying, I might draw on grief-focused work, practical strategies for stress and anxiety, or approaches that look at family and cultural patterns. We'll adjust as we go, based on what actually helps.

It won't always go perfectly, and that's okay. My hope is that you feel safe enough to be honest, and that over time you trust yourself to keep making changes on your own.

In either case, we'll see together whether I'm the right person to help. If I'm not, I'll help point you to someone who is.

What happens in the first session?

It's understandable to feel nervous about talking to someone you've never met. If you're thinking about reaching out, something is probably going on, whether you've noticed it yourself or people around you have.

We'll talk about what's bringing you here and what you're hoping might be different. You don't need a diagnosis or a clear explanation — knowing you're overwhelmed, or that something isn't working, is enough to start.

Will I be diagnosed, or referred elsewhere if needed?

The focus isn't on putting a label on you. A diagnosis can sometimes be useful, and we can talk about it if it comes up, but I want to understand you as a person: what you're experiencing, what you've been through, and what might help. If something comes up that's outside what I can provide, we'll work out together what might be appropriate next.

Can we talk about my faith?

Absolutely — if you want to. My Christian faith is important to me, and I've spent many years involved in church life and ministry. If your faith is an important part of how you understand yourself or what you're going through, I'm comfortable talking about it. But I won't assume that faith is part of your counselling unless you want it to be.

Who do you work with?

Adults 18 and up, in English. Sessions are one-on-one, even when the concern is family dynamics or parenting stress. The one exception is couples counselling, which is for two people together. My focus is on premarital and newly committed couples, though I'm open to inquiries from couples at other stages as well.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you share with me stays between us, with a few important exceptions required by law — like a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child, or a court order. I'll walk through exactly what that means before we begin working together, so there are no surprises. The full details are in the consent form I'll send you, and on the Privacy & terms page.

Can I use insurance, and what's your cancellation policy?

Many plans cover couples counselling through a Registered Social Worker, though coverage and any session caps vary by plan — check with your provider. Direct billing isn't currently available, but I'll provide the receipts you need to claim.

Please give at least 24 hours notice to cancel or change an appointment. Sessions cancelled or missed with less notice are charged the full fee.

How do I book?

Use the buttons on this page; sessions are booked and managed through Jane App. If you'd rather ask a question first, you're welcome to email me. Availability is limited, and if my calendar is full I'm happy to add you to a waitlist.

What if I need help in a crisis?

Counselling with me isn't an emergency or crisis service. If you're in immediate danger or need urgent help, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. In Canada, you can also call or text 988 for immediate suicide crisis support. Please don't use email to contact me about an emergency.

Let's talk

Reach out by email to ask a question or set up a first session. I try to respond within a few business days. Email isn't monitored for emergencies.
